Washington D.C., is a capital district established upon the signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790.  As such it is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress of the United States and not a part of any state. The city of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. All three branches of the federal government – the Congress, the Supreme Court and the Executive – are located here.

Being a very high-profile government center, Washington, D.C. has a primarily service oriented economy.
